Apologies for cross posting DDIG Event Dyslexia and Engineering Climbing up the Slippery Slope - helping the dyslexic engineer master the peaks and troughs of Calculus Friday 14th March 2008 University of Leeds 12:30 to 16:30 This event is the second in a series of three workshops covering different aspects of dyslexia, dyscalculia and the teaching of mathematics. This workshop will consider the difficulties dyslexic engineering students may have with the mathematical components of their courses. The workshop will focus on basic calculus and will be particularly relevant for those who lecture or support students in introductory calculus modules; it will also be useful for all tutors working with students in FE/HE on any higher- level abstract symbolic algebraic material. The event is designed to be a workshop format with 2 hours set aside for working in groups. These will consider existing resources and methods for the teaching of calculus and critically analyse these with respect to an imaginary dyslexic student; his profile will sent to participants before the workshop. It is hoped that delegates will develop strategies, share ideas and make suggestions towards resources that would help dyslexic students with a similar profile. Programme: 12:30 - 13:00 Registration 13:00 - 13:40 Presentation and introduction to the task. Glynis Perkin, Progression Project Officer, Mathematics Education Centre, Loughborough University and Jan Robertson, Senior Lecturer, Maths Learning Centre, De Montfort University. 13:40 - 15:40 Small Group Workshops (Tea/Coffee provided) 15:40 - 16:30 Dissemination of findings, discussion and buffet Attendance fee: £40 On-line booking at: http://mathstore.gla.ac.uk/index.php?pid=123 Closing date: 3rd March 2008
