We did this a long time ago - negotiations with Unions etc. We put a note in everyone's Pay Envelope stating that we would be completing a data matching exercise on CT and Housing Benefit. I think in one of the larger Councils they found some people who had been claimng benefits as well as working but they were given the opportunity to pay it back. Anyone owing CT - an amount would be agreed and would be taken out of their salary. We also added a statement to this effect on job application forms.

We changed our employee Ts&Cs to say something to the effect that employees mustn't be in debt to the Council and that we would share information to check on that

Subject: [data-protection] Pay Claims and Housing Benefit

In common with manyauthorities we are going through the Equal Pay claims process and are currently settling a fair number - cheques up to £10000 or so going out.

Our Housing Benefit people have twigged that this may give them entitlement to claw back some money . They have asked our HR people for lists of payees ...

This has obvious DP implications and my initial reaction is a firm NO. My second reaction is also probably no - but I'd like to think about it some more and if I change my mind we certainly will need to do some clear fair processing notices etc.

Has anyone else grappled with or resolved this situation ?
