The first problem might be solvable if you just wait for gtk+2 fonts to
get cached (sp?).  The

> art_render_invoke:no image source given

has nothing to do with it but you should see it twice.  After the initial
pain, it should start up real fast.

The second problem is just bad karma because you aren't running Ubuntu.
