Subject: Placements for conservation students in the Lesvos Petrified Forest Museum

The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is located in the picturesque village of Sigri, in the western edge of Lesvos Island, the third biggest Greek island. It was founded in 1994, aiming to study, research, appoint, preserve, conserve and protect the Petrified Forest, which covers a large part of the western peninsula of the island. The Petrified Forest was created 20 million years ago, due to the intense volcanic activity in the area. Apart from the museum, where mobile findings (trunks, roots, branches, fruit, leaves etc) are kept, several outdoor parks have been created, in the most important fossil-bearing locations.

The Museum is offering up to five (5) placements for conservation and restoration students in the period May-September 2008. The students will work with the conservation and restoration team, supervised by the head-conservator of the museum, Mrs. E. Kyriazi, and the director of the Museum, Dr. N. Zouros. Their duties will include conservation, restoration, photography and documentation of the fossils, and their work is expected to be realized both within the museum premises, as well as in the outdoor parks.

Candidates should be theoretically or practically experienced in fossil or stone or glass conservation, they should be patient and diligent, be able to work outdoors, have knowledge on computers and photography and communicate in one of the following languages: Greek, English, Italian or German.

The museum is offering bed and breakfast accommodation within its premises.
