Hi,

Apologies for any cross-posting.

I am a PhD candidate in land use-transport studies at the Dept of Architecture, University of Cambridge. As part of my PhD research, I am in the process of developing a residential location model for my case study city in India (Ahmedabad). The model uses rents in a iterative manner as part of the cost function.

In this context, I am looking for guideline values on proportion of income spent on housing. I did a quick search and it appears that around 30% seems to be the magic number; however, I was unable to find any reference to its variation across socioeconomic groups. This variation would be particularly useful for me in seeking an income elasticity for housing demand that would satisfy observed values of proportion of income spent on housing. I would really appreciate if you are able to offer your comments and/or point to any studies you might have come across (any reference to developing countries would be very useful).

Thanking you.

Bhargav
