Hi Kay

I agree with Kay - I once wrote in asking for advice and once offering it and got my fingers "burnt" so to speak.  Often though what is written is not meant to be personal.  You sound very proactive and everyday OH is adventure so to speak - particularly if you work alone and look to Jisc for support.  I often feel like jack of all trades and master of none.

Good luck in your new post as i am quite sure you will do it justice and keep posting..

Best Regards

Steph - I am also studying and should be as i write !!

Kay,

There are hundreds of people who move into new roles and bluff it – at least you are sense checking what you think is right and this forum is for just that!

I have just seen someone with a weird and wonderful “syndrome” and a quick google (choosing my sites of course!) made my consultation a lot more useful otherwise I would have been completely lost with him telling me anything!!.

We don’t know what we don’t know – until it presents for an opinion!

I have made comments on Jisc before which have been misunderstood (or taken out of context) where I wholeheartedly believed my comment would be well received and I am sure Diane AKA the “fossilmatron” comment was not meant to be hurtful either. The pen is mightier than the sword all right!

Well done you for sense checking– good luck with the course and the job.

With regards,
Jane

Please do not be concerned about me, I am neither naive nor stupid and am well aware of the task that lies ahead of me and am a tiny bit miffed that I am seen as someone who needs concern. Not that I need to explain myself, but I am part way through the degree course, have a rather marvellous mentor and a more than adequate brain! That aside I am asking for advice like everyone else on the list as a way of rounding out my knowledge - I thought that's what it was about. Sorry to sound huffy, it shouldn't happen again and please continue to offer your thoughts on the original matter.

Thanks

Kay

Dear Kay and list,
in terms of the safe use of glutaraldehyde in Health Care environment you may find this article useful.
www.nursing-standard.co.uk/archives/ns/vol14-32/pdfs/p4751w32.pdf

But I am really concerned that Kay has gone into a job which requires specialist expertise and with apparently no experience and no support.

"I have recently taken over a department with no-one in post and I am completely new to OH. I am currently looking at respiratory surveillance"

This is not criticism, but concern for well being. I try and imagine If I was put in charge of another  area similarly, such as, say paediatrics or oncology and tried to get on the job training, not just to function as a nurse, but to manage and put in place new procedures and policies. This is the stuff of nightmares. I would be practicing outside of my area of competence and I would feel deeply unsettled.

If you are undertaking health surveillance under COSHH, then there should be an OH Physician having overall supervision, who can give you further guidance both on the programmme (frequency etc), and interpreting individual results.

I am hoping you will have been placed in this role by an large OH Provider who can supply you with mentoring from an experienced OH Advisor and other support. I also hope you are undertaking some formal OH training and are networking to visit other OH practitioners at their places of work(both in hospital and other settings).

If you want to contact me off list, I would be happy to give further guidance.

Best wishes,
Diane
