Dear Kay and list,
in terms of the safe use of glutaraldehyde in Health Care environment you may find this article useful.
www.nursing-standard.co.uk/archives/ns/vol14-32/pdfs/p4751w32.pdf

But I am really concerned that Kay has gone into a job which requires specialist expertise and with apparently no experience and no support.

"I have recently taken over a department with no-one in post and I am completely new to OH. I am currently looking at respiratory surveillance"

This is not criticism, but concern for well being. I try and imagine If I was put in charge of another  area similarly, such as, say paediatrics or oncology and tried to get on the job training, not just to function as a nurse, but to manage and put in place new procedures and policies. This is the stuff of nightmares. I would be practicing outside of my area of competence and I would feel deeply unsettled.

If you are undertaking health surveillance under COSHH, then there should be an OH Physician having overall supervision, who can give you further guidance both on the programmme (frequency etc), and interpreting individual results.

I am hoping you will have been placed in this role by an large OH Provider who can supply you with mentoring from an experienced OH Advisor and other support. I also hope you are undertaking some formal OH training and are networking to visit other OH practitioners at their places of work(both in hospital and other settings).

If you want to contact me off list, I would be happy to give further guidance.

Best wishes,
Diane
