Hi Kay

I work in the NHS and we have managed to eliminate Glut from the workplace - although this is relatively recent. Until then we asked all those exposed to complete a questionnaire and then followed up anyone with positive reponses, including spirometry.

Formaldehyde is still around but risk assessments have been carried out and it is either used as such dilute concentrations and small quantities or within a closed system that again we no longer carry out routine surveillance. When we did it was again a questionnaire in the first instance with follow up as indicated.

Good luck in your new post.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] respiratory surveillance

Hello all

I have recently taken over a department with no-one in post and I am
completely new to OH. I am currently looking at respiratory surveillance
and have narrowed down my suspect substances to glutaraldehyde and
formaldehyde. Does anyone do surveillance for these or are they used in
such ways and at such low concentrations as to pose no hazard. If
surveillance is done is it by questionnaire or questionnaire + spirometry?
I appreciate each workplace is unique, but I would just like an overview
of what others do. I work in a hospital so the offending substances are
found in X-ray, OT and path lab.

Thanks

Kay
