Museums and Galleries Month 2008
The Assembly Government’s Heritage Communications Team has appointed a PR agency to help promote MGM 2008 in Wales. Working Word, based in Wales, is now well underway with planning for the month and will be in touch regularly through these bulletins. CyMAL Grants - last chance to apply
The deadline for grants for MGM events is fast approaching. Applications must be received by 25 January 2008. Information is available from the CyMAL website http://www.cymal.wales.gov.uk under the grants 2008-9 section, along with top tips on how to make a successful application. These include:
Applications for MGM funding are fast-tracked as much as possible and are considered separately from any other projects submitted.

Ideas and Innovation
The theme for this year’s Museums and Galleries Month, Ideas and Innovation, is extremely broad so can be applied to a wide variety of events. We have also developed the strap-line - What Wales Has Done for the World - to help you decide on events and activities linked to the theme. We have lots of great ideas in the pipeline for MGM 2008, we’ll tell you more in future bulletins.
We’d like every museum and gallery in Wales to hold their own event to celebrate MGM 2008 and encourage as many visitors as possible during the month. Some examples of successful events from last year’s MGM are as follows and may help you plan an interesting and unusual event linked to Ideas and Innovation for this year:
· Roman mosaic workshops at the Roman Bath House in Prestatyn
· Showcasing the life of local actor Peter Halliday at Powysland Museum
· Behind the scenes tours at Dolaucothi gold Mines in Carmarthenshire
· An interactive exhibition to showcase Swansea’s contribution to the world of music at Swansea Museum
· Guided tours by local actors at the Welsh Slate Museum in Llanberis
· An exhibition of the sunken Resurgam Submarine at Rhyl Town Hall
· An archival look at the work of Laura Ashley at Llanidloes Museum
Wales has known many innovators and people with new ideas over the centuries, so what about planning an event that is different from the usual activity?
