The project will be carried out through a collaboration between the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science and the Institute for Science and Society.

Qualifications: Candidates must have completed, or be about to complete, a PhD in a relevant social science which has involved some attention to knowledge management or transfer, and be willing to establish an interest in animal health and welfare within commercial environments.

Project Base and Supervision:
The collaboration between the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science (SVMS) and the Institute for Science and Society will allow the successful candidate to work with and benefit from experience within both these centres.
The School of Veterinary Medicine and Science (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/vet) was established in 2006, and is the first new veterinary school to be established for over 50 years. It is already building a reputation for excellence and innovation in teaching and research. The School is establishing a new Centre of Evidence-Based Veterinary Medicine in conjunction with Novartis Animal Health. The Centre will develop an international reputation in data collation, disease surveillance, clinical decision-making and epidemiological research. The supervisors for the current project will be Dr Jon Huxley ([log in to unmask]), Dr Mark Bowen ([log in to unmask]) and Dr Sarah Freeman ([log in to unmask]).
The Institute for Science and Society (ISS) (www.nottingham.ac.uk/iss) is an internationally-recognized centre for research in the social, legal, ethical and cultural implications of science, technology and medicine. Since its foundation in 1998, it has secured over £5 million in competitive research funding from the Leverhulme and Wellcome Trusts, ESRC, NERC, MRC, EPSRC, BBSRC, EU and various NHS/NIHR programmes, and in commissions from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the Food Standards Agency. ISS has an established interest in the translation of knowledge from academic research into commercial products or clinical practice and is currently carrying out projects funded by the Department of Health and by EPSRC in this area. ISS is also developing a wider research programme on animals and society, in collaboration with colleagues from the Veterinary School, supported by grants from the Wellcome Trust. The collaborator within the Institute for Science and Society will be Professor Robert Dingwall.
