	Dear Kirsty

I take your point that using no wrapper could have environmental benefits.
On a related topic, have you considered the environmental benefits of
printing all your journals on A4? We used to do this, then the society's new
editor wanted us to go smaller. A test 12 page article went to 16 pages
despite going down one point in type size. Given that most computer printers
and photocopiers are filled with A4 or the similar US size, anyone printing
from online or photocopying was going to use 16 pages, not 12 - a 33%
increase. Also, their journal is printed on 100% post-consumption recycled
paper which turned out to be available in Europe only in sizes suitable for
A series sizes, so a smaller size would be achieved by printing on A4 and
then trimming down! We stayed with A4.

Also, staying with A4 allowed us to stay with saddle stitching; a smaller
size would have pushed us in glued binding which we sense is less
environmental desirable.

Subject: Journals without wrappers?

Dear colleagues

Due to our own environmental concerns, and because some of our society
partners are requesting it, we're investigating the feasibility of sending
out some journals without wrappers. The cover of these journals would
instead contain a sticker with address information which could be easily
removed.

We understand that a number of journals, notably Nature and Science, are
already sent out this way in the US?

We would appreciate answers, on or off list, to the following questions:

1. Do you receive journals without wrappers?
2. If so, do they arrive damaged?
3. Do you/how often do you have to raise claims to the publisher for damaged
copies?

Many thanks in advance.

Kirsty
