Tom,

We have no detected no cartographic evidence of this claim, including recently acquired 2007 maps and atlases.  In all instances, the Chinese line extends to the base of the Himalayas.  Interestingly, recent edition Chinese maps continue to use older edition international boundaries (and state so in the marginalia) -- notably with respect to Russia and Tajikistan --  where the boundary has been changed and settled.   One suspects China's MFA has yet to issue a definitive GIS digital boundary to the numerous decentralized mapping organizations throughout the country.

Subject: [INT-BOUNDARIES] Question on Arunachal Pradesh

Greetings all,

I have a question regarding the current status of the Chinese claim on the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. Long have I assumed that the Chinese claim is not 100% coincidental with the area of the state of Arunachal Pradesh, as evidenced by Chinese maps (such as the 2006 government map found here: http://map.sbsm.gov.cn/mcp/MapProduct/153/map.htm).

However, I recently came across a news story in which the following statement was made on November 20, 2006 by Sun Yuzxi, China's Ambassador to India: "In our position, the whole of the state of Arunachal Pradesh is Chinese territory. And Tawang is only one of the places in it. We are claiming all of that. That is our position."

Can anyone verify if Sun Tuzxi’s statement truly represents the Chinese government’s current position? I haven’t been able to find any cartographic content to confirm this position.

Thank you,
