Rationale The conference highlights the value of maritime cultural heritage in the 21st century. Coastal areas are generally rich with heritage assets. They are the physical expression of our multinational past and are the building blocks of a cross community identity which can engender social responsibility, inclusiveness and a common sense of place. Accordingly, it warrants effective management. This conference looks to determine how maritime heritage can be integrated fully with other sectors to ensure its benefits and also its future protection. The aims of the conference are: To raise awareness of the multi-faceted value of maritime heritage; To understand the benefits of incorporating maritime heritage within other cultural and economic aims; To explain new management regimes and highlight the responsibilities of coastal practitioners. Who Should Attend? Decision and policy-makers and others involved in planning policy People working in coastal management Those who work in the tourism, recreation and cultural sector All those interested in seeing coastal and marine heritage realising its full potential. Programme (working draft attached with flyer) Day one will consist of an introductory session including a keynote address from Ken Robinson CBE, chair of the national Visitor Attractions Forum, and chair of the Tourism Society Think Tank, on the future for maritime heritage. The day will then go on to explore the value of maritime heritage across all sectors and look at how maritime cultural assets are currently managed. Day two will explore how heritage can be better integrated and set a framework for action. There will be a keynote address on the European approach to heritage management, followed by presentations on possible mechanisms for improved integration, management and protection. The event will culminate with a field trip looking at maritime cultural assets in Portsmouth harbour from the land, sea and air (no plane involved!).
