While more memory is better-- honestly you might be able to surive with 8GB's (2 gb's per CORE). I am not that familiar with FSL on the MAC, but at least probtrackx under my linux rarely takes > 1.75 gbs. So 8 GB's would provide you with a decent amount of headroom.

I am using a mac pro with 4 processors and 4 gb of ram. Sometimes I can run 2 probtracks in parallel, and sometimes I crash it or slow it way down.I hope you mean the probtrackx crashes not the mac itself? If your mac is crashing then this may indicate some hardware reliability issues with your mac. Machines shouldn't crash as a result of running user tasks.
You are absolutely right, probtrackx croaks...not the machine.
I've found 16 gb of FB apple certified dimms online for $630...
so we think that is worth a shot.
