While more memory is better-- honestly you might be able to surive with 8GB's (2 gb's per CORE).  I am not that familiar with FSL on the MAC, but at least probtrackx under my linux rarely takes > 1.75 gbs.  So 8 GB's would provide you with a decent amount of headroom.

I hope you mean the probtrackx crashes not the mac itself? If your mac is crashing then this may indicate some hardware reliability issues with your mac. Machines shouldn't crash as a result of running user tasks. 

You are absolutely right, probtrackx croaks...not the machine. 
I've found 16 gb of FB apple certified dimms online for $630...
so we think that is worth a shot.
