The conference will be devoted to phonetic diversity in the world's languages. The goals of the conference are to promote and to discuss issues related to the description of sounds and sounds systems, methods of analysis and the presentation of new data that illustrate the phonetic diversity of the world's languages. The conference aims at presenting a platform for the discussion of any topic that is illuminated by taking language diversity into account.
The conference will be hosted by: The Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences of Belgium, the Speech Sciences Laboratory of the Académie Universitaire Wallonie-Bruxelles, the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Université de Mons-Hainaut.

The aim of the event is to bring together researchers who investigate various aspects of English phonetics and English pronunciation both from the theoretical and pedagogical perspectives. Papers addressing comparative issues between English and another language are most welcome.
The English Department at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, is pleased to announce the first international meeting of the phoneticians of English.
The official language of the conference is English. The keynote speaker is Dr. Jane Setter, University of Reading, UK.
Each paper will be allotted 30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion).
A selection of papers will be published after the conference.

LOCATION
Brno is the the second largest city in the Czech Republic with a population of almost 400.000 and is the country's judiciary and trade-fair center. Brno is the capital of Moravia, which is in the south-east part of the Czech Republic. It had been a Royal City since 1347 and with its six universities it forms a cultural center of the region.
Brno can be reached easily by direct flights from London, Moscow, Barcelona and Prague and by trains or buses from Prague (200 km) or Vienna (130 km).

16th Manchester Phonology Meeting

The mfm is the UK's annual phonology conference, with an international set of organisers; it is held in late May every year in Manchester (central in the UK, easily accessible from the whole of the country, and with excellent international transport connections). The meeting has become a key conference for phonologists from all corners of the world, where anyone who declares themselves to be interested in phonology can submit an abstract on anything phonological in any phonological framework. In an informal atmosphere, we discuss a broad range of topics, including the phonological description of a wide variety of languages, issues in phonological theory, aspects of phonological acquisition and implications of phonological change.
Special Session: Phonology and the mental lexicon
We are pleased to announce our Sixteenth Manchester Phonology Meeting (16mfm). The information available now is a preliminary announcement of our plans for the 16mfm. A full call for papers will be issued soon. Abstract submission will be as in previous years and the deadline for abstracts will be 25th February 2007.
There is no conference theme for the 16mfm - abstracts can be submitted on anything, but, following the success of such sessions in previous years, a special themed session featuring invited speakers is being organised for the Friday afternoon, entitled 'Phonology and the mental lexicon', and abstracts which attempt to deal overtly with the issues involved with this (from any perspective) will certainly be welcome.

Workshop on Empirical Approaches to Speech Rhythm Center for Human Communication, UCL

Empirical studies of speech rhythm are becoming increasingly popular. Metrics for the quantification of rhythm have been applied to typological, developmental, pathological and perceptual questions. The prevalence of rhythm metrics based on durational characteristics of consonantal and vocalic intervals (e.g. deltaV, deltaC, %V, nPVI-V, rPVI-C, VarcoV and VarcoC) indicate the need for agreement about their relative efficacy and reliability. More fundamentally, it remains to be demonstrated whether such metrics really quantify speech rhythm, a controversial and elusive concept.

Evidence-based Voice and Speech Rehabilitation is of increasing relevance in Head &Neck Oncology. The number of patients requiring treatment for cancer in the upper respiratory and vocal tract keeps rising. Moreover, treatment - whether it concerns an "organ preservation protocol" or traditional surgery and radiotherapy - negatively impacts the function of organs vital for communication. A "function preservation treatment" does, unfortunately, not yet exist. This workshop seeks to assemble the latest and most relevant knowledge on evidence-based voice and speech rehabilitation. Aside from the main topic (voice and speech rehabilitation after total laryngectomy), other areas, such as vocal issues in early-stage larynx carcinoma, and various stages of oral /oropharyngeal carcinoma will be addressed.
The workshop comprises four topical sessions:
Postlaryngectomy perceptual and acoustic analysis: Britta Hammarberg; Corina van As-Brooks Postlaryngectomy imaging and aerodynamics of the neoglottis and vocal tract: Ulrich Eysholdt;Jeff Searl Postlaryngectomy rehabilitation / intervention and quality of life studies: Petra Jongmans; Tanya Eady Other head and neck rehabilitation topics: Irma Verdonck-de Leeuw; Phillip Doyle Each session includes two keynote lectures plus a round-table discussion and (maximally 10) poster presentations pertinent to the session's topic. A work document, based on the keynote lectures, will form the basis for each round-table discussion. This work document will contain all presently available research evidence, discuss its (clinical) relevance and will formulate directions and areas of interest for future research. The keynote lectures, work documents and poster papers are to be compiled into Workshop Proceedings, and will be published under ISCA flag (website: www.isca-speech.org). It is our aim to make these Proceedings available at the workshop. This will result in a useful and traceable 'State of the Art' handbook/CD/web publication.
Additional notes about the program:
The chairpersons will prepare a work document on their session's topic, in consultation with the keynote lecturers. The round-table discussions will focus on the topic at hand. Those present during the session will be invited to participate in the discussion. The 30' poster sessions allow for 9-10 short presentations with maximally 4 slides to draw attention for the poster in the subsequent poster visit session. The posters will relate to the sessions' topic as much as possible. The papers, based on the posters will form an integral part of the Workshop Proceedings, together with the keynote lectures and the work documents.
Author's information
The main focus of this two-day workshop on evidence based rehabilitation in head and neck oncology will be on the keynote lectures and the work documents, drafted on the bases of these lectures prior to the workshop. However, researchers and clinicians are kindly invited to submit abstracts for posters, and after acceptance to submit a short paper based on their poster as well. These short papers will also be discussed and will be included in the Workshop Proceedings.
Abstracts for Posters (and the short oral presentation) must be structured and should contain the data to be presented (".... data will be presented at the meeting ...." is not acceptable). For the selection procedure, the abstract should maximally be one page, single spaced (Times New Roman 9 Pitch), including a figure, a table, and/or references. After acceptance of the poster abstract, authors have to send in a paper about the poster for publication in the Proceedings, which maximally can be 4 pages A4, according to the predefined format that can be downloaded from the 'Format papers' page of the above mentioned website. The Keynote papers and work documents are maximally 10 pages A4, according to the same predefined format as the 'poster papers'.

Poster layout
Posters should contain the title, authors' names and full addresses, including email and/or fax number, similar to the layout of the abstracts. Please use large font type! The poster should be legible from a distance to permit viewing by more than one person at a time. To fit the poster boards, the maximum dimensions of the poster should be not more than 100 cm wide and 120 cm high. The availability of handouts is recommended. The posters are based on the paper (maximally 4 pages A4 of the prescribed formats) or on the abstract (maximally 1 page A4 of the prescribed formats), which will be published in the Workshop Proceedings. The authors will have to give a 3-minute presentation at the poster sessions (maximally 10 presentations per session) on Thursday morning (12:00 until 12:30), or Thursday afternoon (16.45-17.15), or Friday morning (11:15 until 11:45), or Friday afternoon (16.00-16.30) to promote their poster for the subsequent poster tour, included in the program as well.

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is offering two scholarships for students enrolling on the MSc programme in Forensic Speech Science, 2008-2009. The scholarships provide a tuition fee waiver at the UK/European Union rate (currently £3,240). Applicants from any country are eligible for consideration.
Successful applicants will be asked to demonstrate, before registration, that they have sufficient funds to cover their living expenses and, if overseas, the balance of the overseas tuition fee. You should have a university degree in computer science or related disciplines. Several years of applied and theoretical experience in several of the areas mentioned would be ideal; a PhD or an equivalent level of experience would be helpful. You should have sound knowledge and experience in professional software development of large systems, operating systems and modern programming languages. An application-oriented perspective and a concern for customers should characterize your professional attitude. Depending on projects the positions are either focussed on development or on research.
