How can museums, libraries and archives support the drive for Community Empowerment and put the community at the heart of London's culture and heritage?

There is an increasing emphasis being placed by Government on councils to enable their local communities to take a more active role in the shaping and delivery of public services. Other funders are also increasingly looking for more active involvement from users in new developments and programmes. This free seminar will consider and discuss how museums, libraries and archives can contribute to this policy agenda through the building of innovative and sustainable community partnerships.

Chaired by Graham Fisher, Chief Executive MLA London the seminar will

• give an overview of the CLG's Community Empowerment Action plan and its progress to date
• discuss the role and development of Community Anchors and identify the opportunity for museums, libraries and archives to work with them to link to their local community and voluntary sectors
• discuss the opportunities of working on community empowerment with the HE sector
• discuss the practical challenges and the benefits of working with community and voluntary organisations and what museum, library and archive services need to be aware of when preparing to work in this way.

Speakers will include
Helen Marsh from CLG talking about the CLGs Community Empowerment Action plan, Ben Hughes from BASSAC discussing the role of Community Anchors, Sally MacDonald from UCL on their Community Engagement Beacon Status and Angela Fletcher from L B Sutton Heritage Service talking about their experience of working with their local communities.

Who should attend?
This policy and practice seminar is targeted at those working in local authority museums, libraries and archives and community development and community anchor organisations. It will be particularly useful for those staff with responsibilities for service planning and development, performance and partnerships.
