Subject: [Addiction Course Convenors] Minutes of the University of Sussex meeting on January 21st

Minutes of the AERC sponsored meeting of the "Advisory Group" of convenors
of Post graduate addiction courses at the University of Sussex on January
21st

1.      The content of courses was discussed and we agreed that it is
essential that alcohol and drugs be treated equally.

2.      We agreed that it would be helpful to use AERC funding for
studentships more strategically. This might involve funding students who
have not worked in the alcohol field but who intend to conduct research
and work in this area in the future. It might also involve funding a
larger number of smaller bursaries rather than paying full fees and
stipends for full-time students only. Finally, since drugs and alcohol are
now routinely covered together we agreed it would be helpful if AERC
funding was available to applicants with a research interests in both.

3.      To inform the issue above we agreed that it would be helpful to
conduct a survey of graduate destinations to determine how many graduates
end up working as practitioners in the field of alcohol and/or drugs, how
many are promoted as a result of their qualification and how many go on to
study for a PhD

4.      We agreed that, in principal, it is helpful to explore how the
DANOS criteria map onto the content of taught courses

5.      Rowdy and I agreed to explore developing an online UK learning
initiative

6.      We agreed to invite Ray Hodgson to chair the next meeting at AERC
HQ on May 19th. (Ray has since agreed to this in principle)
