The ICI's second "Spannungsübung" is dedicated to hermeneutics as a
dominant method in the humanities. On the occasion of the German
"Year of the Humanities," we have invited two renowned intellectuals
to discuss their differing positions on hermeneutics and
interpretation: HANS ULRICH GUMBRECHT and GIANNI VATTIMO.

THE BLUE FLOWER OF PRESENCE
For many in the humanities and cultural studies, the linguistic turn
that Richard Rorty proclaimed forty years ago means that – after God
and metaphysics – now also 'reality' has lost power over us, thereby
opening up heretofore unknown spaces of freedom. The so-called '68
movement is unthinkable without these theoretical prerequisites. At
the same time, we associate with the same movement an anti-
hermeneutical focus on corporeality, passion, and presence in
opposition to an anemic culture of interpretation. This unsettling
tension will be the focus of the second Spannungsübung. It also
informs basic questions of politics, philosophy, and religion: Is the
yearning for experiences of presence and for a substantiality of
being politically dangerous or even discredited, or is it, at least
as a corrective, indispensable? Is the human being disposed to a
constant transcending of the self and nature, or is it imperative to
finally come into the world? Is an indefinite deferral our
destiny, or are strong forms of presence (Real Presence, Epiphany,
Second Coming, Salvation) essential?

Die zweite Spannungsübung widmet sich zum Abschluss des "Jahres der
Geisteswissenschaften" der dominierenden Methode der
Geisteswissenschaften, der Hermeneutik. Dazu sind zwei Denker von
Rang eingeladen, die sich über Jahrzehnte theoretisch engagiert mit
Hermeneutik und Interpretation in allen ihren Dimensionen beschäftigt
haben und die in dieser Frage zugleich als Antipoden bezeichnet
werden können: HANS ULRICH GUMBRECHT und GIANNI VATTIMO.
DIE BLAUE BLUME DER PRÄSENZ
Für viele Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaftler bedeutet der vor vierzig
Jahren von Richard Rorty verkündete linguistic turn die frohe
Botschaft, dass nun, nach Gott und der Metaphysik, auch die
'Realität' ihre Macht über uns verloren habe und wir dadurch nie
gekannte Freiheitsspielräume erringen könnten. Die so genannte 68er
Bewegung ist ohne diese theoretischen Voraussetzungen nicht denkbar.
Zugleich verbinden wir mit der gleichen Bewegung auch eine
antihermeneutische Tendenz in Richtung Körperlichkeit, Leidenschaft,
Präsenz und gegen eine anämische Interpretationskultur. Um diese
verwirrende Konfliktlinie soll es in der zweiten Spannungsübung
gehen. Was hier verhandelt wird, betrifft im weiteren auch
Grundfragen der Politik, der Philosophie, der Religion: Ist die
Sehnsucht nach Präsenzerfahrungen und einer Substantialität des Seins
politisch gefährlich oder gar diskreditiert, oder ist sie, zumindest
als Korrektiv, unaufgebbar? Ist der Mensch zur ständigen Selbst- und
Naturtra nszendierung angelegt, oder gilt es, endlich zur Welt zu kommen?
Ist ein unendlicher Aufschub unser Schicksal, oder sind starke Formen von
Präsenz (Realpräsenz, Epiphanie, Parusie, Erlösung) unverzichtbar?
