Dear All,

I have been in communication with our highways team responsible for accident statistics reporting.  They use a standard format born out of a reporting document supplied by the police - I presume ACPO approved.

The data is sent to the DfT as a txt file (no password or encryption) with summary data as a word document.  The data sets provided do not include the name or date of birth of the driver but does include vehicle registration, driver age, driver full post code.

The data also includes casualty data, postcode, age etc.

I am thinking about risks of data loss - reputation, scandal etc and possible DPA implications.

Given recent data losses I am a little concerned about such data being sent to DfT by email unencrypted.   I am not going to go into risk analysis here, we can all come to different conclusions.

My question is  " Is anyone else having to consider such data transfers and what, if any, conclusions have you reached?

I have embargoed further release to DfT until I have carried out a risk assessment, so any views (off list or on) much appreciated.
