CFP: Ireland and Romanticism: Publics, nations, and the scenes of culturalproduction

Despite the breadth of Irish artistic achievement across various media in the decades surrounding the 1798 Rebellion and 1801 Act of Union, there is still a comparative lack of sustained analysis of this foundational period in Irish cultural history.  While much critical work has been focused on individual authors, there has, with notable exceptions, been little cross-disciplinary work devoted to Irish writing and culture in the ‘Romantic’ period. In particular, Irish links with European literatures and Irish language productions have been relatively neglected.  This collection seeks to redress this neglect and to complicate and extend our understanding of Irish cultural development in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

This collection also aims to investigate the viability of Irish Romanticism as a structuring category for analysis of cultural productions in this period. Given the unstable boundaries of both ‘Irish’ and ‘Romanticism’ as terms, it is hoped that this collection will not only be a valuable addition toIrish Studies, but also useful to students interested in this vitally important period in European culture.

Essays are sought on any aspect of Irish culture in the period, although particular topics for consideration might include:

  • Oral literature and Irish Romanticism
  • Political languages in Romantic period Ireland
