I have just informed Rowdy that my company has won the contract
to evaluate this new project (LEAP – Lothians and Edinburgh Abstinence Project)
over the next two years. We will be using the ASI-X to help develop an outcome
monitoring programme and will be following up clients initially at 6 and 12
month post treatment intervals. We will hopefully be able to compare these
outcomes against a control group – which we are trying to set up at
present – to see whether the LEAP programme provides better results for
clients than the traditional interventions which are currently available.
I can confirm that the programme is seeking to include elements
of TC philosophy although they are probably more aligned to 12 steps in their thinking.
It is a very exciting initiative to be involved in as it is an attempt by the
Scottish Government to pilot new schemes aimed at ending the reliance on
methadone prescribing and purely opiate based interventions. It is also a
response to service user surveys which indicate that the majority of clients do
actually register abstinence as a goal of treatment. For some reason this
appears to be new and surprising information to a lot of the powers that be in
the drug and alcohol sector in the UK! Personally I think it is plain common
sense and a fairly logical conclusion but maybe I’m just turning into an
old cynic?!!
I’ll be happy to keep folk informed, as well as Rowdy, as
to developments with this project – especially from a TC point of view.
Kind regards,
Andy Perkins

This
new organisation in Scotland does not refer to itself as a TC but does have TC
elements and sounds interesting. I am hoping to visit them soon and get a
clearer picture:
