Some list members may have seen reports in the Sunday newspapers that the BBC has signed up Sam Mendes and his production company to `re-make all 37 of its own classic productions of Shakespeare’s plays in a project expected to take 12 years’. Mendes is to direct several of the plays himself. The BBC is talking to US broadcasters HBO for funding; the cost is expected to be around £100m. Jonathan Miller, who directed plays in the BBC Television Shakespeare series (1979-1985), commented `I am not certain it was that interesting an enterprise the first time round’.
