I am glad that Paula has been able to provide the background to the
conferences. I was part of the steering committee for last year`s
conference in Edinburgh, working with Paula, Barabara Lee, and Jane
Berry and Helen Brand from the HEA. We learnt last year that there would
be no official backing from the HEA for a conference on this important
area of personal academic tutoring in 2008. This meant that linking up
with NACADA provided us with a chance to hold a tutoring conference next
year.
I agree with Paula that personal tutoring has many different issues in
HE and was really shocked when I learnt last year that tutoring was not
one of the areas the HEA would continue to support. I strongly agree on
the need for a national annual event, and would urge you all to support
Paula`s idea of contacting the HEA requesting that they include personal
tutoring events in next year`s budget.
I also hope to meet some of you in Pittsburgh.
