CHINA NOW launches education programme

Our aim is to encourage more schools to engage with Chinese culture in the classroom, whilst supporting and furthering the excellent work that is already taking place throughout the UK.

The education programme includes funding for workshops, free teaching aids, nationwide competitions and grants for primary and secondary schools across the UK. Visit www.chinanow.org.uk/education for more details.

CHINA NOW, the UK’s largest ever festival of Chinese culture, is offering an education programme for primary and secondary schools, supported by HSBC.  The free education packs provide an introduction to Mandarin, contain ancient Chinese stories and contain creative activities. Helping schools to celebrate Chinese New Year, the packs introduce China's amazing culture and rich heritage to students at primary or secondary schools.

Funding is also available for primary and secondary schools who would like to apply for a range of exciting Chinese-themed workshops. The funding will include support for activities such as Chinese face-painting, calligraphy workshops , Beijing Opera lessons and Kung Fu training amongst many others.  Grants of up to £2500 are available for schools, local authorities or other organisations to organise their own China related activties during the CHINA NOW festival. The full list of workshops as well as application forms can be downloaded from the website.

The education programme is designed to help students understand the important part that China will play on the world stage in the 21st century. China has the biggest population in the world and the fourth largest economy.  By 2040, China is expected to have the largest economy in the world. For every one person who can speak English, there are at least three who can speak Mandarin.

CHINA NOW is working in partnership with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, the British Council and the UK Federation of Chinese schools. More events will be announced as we get closer to the festival in February 2008.  If you are planning a Chinese event in your school and would like to include it in the CHINA NOW festival then please contact us at [log in to unmask]
