This is a reminder email - deadline for applications is November 19th to goriain at compass.ie. ***************************************** National Biodiversity Data Centre Beechfield House, Carriganore Waterford Institute of Technology Waterford, Ireland Job Announcement Data & ICT Manager - National Biodiversity Data Centre The National Biodiversity Data Centre is the recently established biological records centre for Ireland and is an initiative of the Heritage Council. The Centre is based on the Carriganore campus of Waterford Institute of Technology. The Centre is operated under a service level agreement by Compass Informatics Limited. The Centre now wishes to employ a Data and GIS/ICT Manager to undertake the following key tasks, and others as may arise: 1. Support and extension of data management systems including Recorder and TurboVeg, and GIS-based tools. 2. Support and extension of web services for presentation and serving of data. 3. Setup and undertaking of data conversion projects including development of tools and methods to transfer data from other digital and hardcopy formats. 4. Liaison with data contributors including provision of technical advice and appropriate assistance. 5. Liaison with ecologists and staff at the Centre on a daily basis. 6. Management, with the main IT & GIS team in Compass Informatics, of Centre ICT systems. The post will be based at the National Biodiversity Data Centre, Carriganore, Waterford. It is intended that the post will commence in January 2007. The proposed salary is €30,000-€45,000 (higher level negotiable) plus 5% pension contribution, commensurate with skills, experience and aptitude. The appointed person will have the appropriate database and IT skills including proven knowledge and aptitude in data management, database design, SQL querying, and programming of tools for data extraction, transformation and loading. A background in, or knowledge of, natural history or a related disciple will prove advantageous. While it is not expected that candidates will have expertise in all areas, applicants should highlight those skills that match the Centre’s requirements. The main Compass GIS & Systems Development team develops and supports all systems. The Data & ICT Manager will work with this team and provide further expertise and initiative. NBDC Systems Overview The primary database systems in use are Recorder, MapMate, TurboVeg, and SQL Server. Internal management systems include SharePoint, Exchange Server, and a custom time tracking and project management suite. The NBDC website, currently being developed, uses DotNetNuke Content Management System. The NBDC mapping system, currently under development uses SQL Server, ESRI GIS (ArcIMS/ArcSDE, ArcGIS Server), with custom .Net programming, running on in-house servers.
