The probation service shares information with an increasing number of
different agencies, who can provide specialist services for offenders.
Apart from the statutory exchanges with courts, police, local authorities
etc we do a lot of work with the voluntary sector, providing alcohol,
drug, education and similar services. We also have to deal with private
sector companies like private prisons or Group 4 for monitoring curfews.
Then there are the software companies who provide our HR and finance
software and the scanning company who scan old files. I haven't been
involved with the national arrangements for prisons and Group 4 , but the
rest are all local and all have an information sharing agreement

Subject
[data-protection] Information Sharing Code of Practice

You may remember that I was interested in this code and its application to
the private sector. It's taken a while for my enquiry to get to the top
of the UKIC's pile, but here is the answer they sent me earlier today:

BEGINS:
One of the main motivations for the creation of the Code of Practice was
to address the increase in data sharing which is currently taking place by
bodies in the public sector. However, it was also recognised that the
sharing of personal information is becoming an ever increasing part of
private sector activity. With this in mind, the Code of Practice has been
purposely written so that it can be used by both public and private sector
bodies to establish their own personal information sharing procedures.
ENDS

The question I have for us all is "Under what circumstances would we
envisage data being shared by the private sector with other organisations,
either private or public?
