Joy The letters "A.V." normally stand for "Army Veterinary", but are usually accompanied by "Corps" or "Department", and the description of the photo doesn't indicate any connection with that branch of the army. One thing that you could suggest to the lady from Sutton is that TNA have in their library a book which contains a comprehensive list of WW1 abbreviations, so it might be worth a call to them.
