 	 Greetings!

Life Works is bringing to you a unique opportunity to learn the successful techniques of intervention from two leading experts in the field.

The technique of intervention has received a great deal of attention in addiction treatment settings, private practices of psychology and psychiatry as well as within the media.
The basic idea behind intervention is to encourage the chemically dependent person to enter a confrontational treatment plan guided by a trained therapist and implemented by family members, co- workers and significant others. This therapeutic confrontation aims to "raise the bottom" of the subject's drinking or drug use before causing catastrophic consequences.

Models of intervention borrow from concepts and tools from twelve-step recovery and Psychotherapy; including family systems theory and addictions counselling. In this workshop, Ms. Heather Hayes- a licensed therapist and interventionist- will describe the history of this technique and outline the three main models of intervention:

*	The Johnson Model, first developed by Vernon Johnson in the 1970's
*	The ARISE Model, developed by Garrett and Landau in the 1990's
*	The Family Systematic Model, first formulated by Speare and Raiter in the 1990's, and further developed in this decade

Ms. Hayes will address complex interventions that confront eating disorders, domestic violence, trauma, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Finally, women's issues and intervention ethics will be discussed.

Dr. Kevin McCauley will co-teach this workshop. He will address the medical aspects of addiction, outline a treatment plan for the first year of recovery and address ethical issues.

Biography

Heather R. Hayes, M.eD., LPC has a Master's degree in counselling. She has worked in the addiction field for over twenty years. She has publications on adolescent addiction as well as substance abuse and family violence. She has a private practice in Atlanta, Georgia, USA and also works as an interventionist. She presents nationally as well as internationally. She has recently presented at the Milton Erickson Foundation, Rottweil in Heidelberg, Germany.

Dr. Kevin McCauley, graduated from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1992, thereafter he joined the United States Navy, serving as Flight Surgeon to a Marine helicopter squadron at the Marine Corps Air Station in Orange Country, California. Dr. McCauley became interested in the problem of addiction after witnessing the success of the Navy's programme for treating pilot's with alcohol problems. Dr. McCauley now lives in Park City, Utah and works for the Institute for Addiction Study, a non- profit group dedicated to helping families understand addiction.

"The training was really useful, it has changed my view of addicts will only go into treatment if they want to." Carole
