Consultancy opportunity: Network development coordinator for the British Council’s Beautiful Science project

Beautiful Science is a project promoting science communication as a major driver of changing attitudes of science in society and encouraging young people to consider science careers. The project involves Austria, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Israel, Romania, Serbia &  Turkey and the UK, and has different elements, through which a network of over 120 young scientists from SEE and the UK will be equipped with better skills in communicating their work to a wider, non-professional audience. The British Council is seeking a network co-ordinator and mentor for young science communicators in Austria, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Israel, Romania, Serbia & Turkey. This will be a part-time position starting from November 2007 to June 2008 and based in the UK, working closely with the British Council team in those countries and the UK, and reporting directly to the project manager in Bulgaria. The post-holder will be working up to 2 days a week and will be paid a fee of £1000 per month. They will need to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge:

- Interpersonal and communication skills,

- leadership and mentoring skills

- relationship building

- ability to deliver complex projects in a demanding international environment

- web content development and site management

- professional standing as a science communicator

Main duty: To develop the network of science communicators from the UK and the 9 countries involved in Beautiful Science by:

1. Managing the launch and first few months of an interactive website (or a sub-site of the Talking Science website ( www.britishcouncil.org/science/talkingscience ) ensuring that there is active participation from all nine countries (Austria, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Israel, Romania, Serbia &  Turkey)

2. Interacting through the site with members of the Beautiful Science network and identifying ways in which they can work with the BC and other partners to develop innovative approaches to science communication in their respective countries

3. Identifying opportunities for professional development for network members and providing mentoring for network members

4. Prepare the programme and work on the organisation of the Beautiful Science Networking event (May 2007)

5. Working with the Beautiful Science team and Famelab UK to create opportunities for a FameLab Roadshow, and deliver at least two Roadshows (eg Istanbul and Barcelona, possibly also Brussels) (This will include finding some sponsorship for the costs of doing the roadshows)
