From: Eugene Wagner <[log in to unmask] edu> Subject: Position announcement To: [log in to unmask] org Distinguished Professor for Science Education The College of Arts & Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications and nominations for a senior science educator who will establish her or his vigorous science education program at UNCG and work with faculty in the College and in the School of Education on campus initiatives to improve K-16 education in the sciences. The successful candidate will become the first Helena Gabriel Houston Distinguished Professor for Science Education, with a tenured position as a full professor in an appropriate department in the College, e.g., Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Geography, Physics & Astronomy, and with the possibility of a joint appointment in the School of Education. For this position, we seek a senior scientist or science educator with a strong record of accomplishments in science education, national recognition in the field, and clear evidence of the ability to attract significant external funding. With this appointment, the University seeks to build on a long tradition at UNCG of excellence in teacher education, drawing on interest and enthusiasm among both scientists and science educators on campus to address the critical societal issue of science education. It is anticipated that the Houston Professor will also play a leadership role in the University's proposed Institute for the Advancement of Learning in Mathematics and Science currently under discussion. UNCG is a rapidly growing urban university and currently enrolls approximately 17,300 students (including 3,000 graduate students) in the College and six professional schools and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a research university with high research activity. In the sciences, the College offers the PhD in Psychology and Geography and is planning doctorates in Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Mathematics & Statistics. The School of Education offers the PhD in Curriculum & Instruction and in several other disciplines. Teacher education at UNCG is coordinated by the Teachers' Academy, which includes representation from the School of Education and academic departments involved in teacher education. UNCG is especially proud of the diversity of its student body (20% African-American, 6.5% other ethnic minorities, 68% female) and we seek to attract an equally diverse applicant pool for this position, including women and members of minority groups. We are an EEO/AA employer with a strong commitment to increasing faculty diversity and will respond creatively to the needs of dual-career couples. Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2007, and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit a cover letter, detailed curriculum vitae, and contact information for four professional references. In the cover letter, or as a separate attachment, the candidate should articulate her or his vision for the role of science education at a research campus. Electronic applications and inquiries are preferred and should be sent to Professor Jerry L. Walsh, Chair of the Search Committee at [log in to unmask] edu. Applications sent by mail should be addressed to the Science Education Search Committee, College of Arts & Sciences, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro, NC 27402. Applications will be kept confidential on request. -- Dr. Keith S.
