12th century  stories about Placid, largely from the facile imagination of Peter the Deacon  of Montecassino, took him to Sicily, where he was martyred along with several members of his family by invading Saracens (who of course did not yet exist). A fascinating set of stories (in three separate Vitae by Peter)  fashioned in part to vindicate Cassinese claims to lands in S. Italy and Sicily.

Actually, there is an abundance of such indications.  There is no indication in Gregory's text that _P._ is a saint.
