Call for applications; volunteer webmaster, Museums Computer Group

22/10/2007

Deadline: Friday November 2, 2007

Overall

The Museums Computer Group is the sector association for museum,
gallery, library and archive digital specialists, strategists and those
involved with the growth and development of research and good practice
in the digital cultural sector.

MCG currently has a functional website - www.museumscomputergroup.org.uk
<http://www.museumscomputergroup.org.uk/> - which acts as the hub of
our online activities. There's a thriving email newslist with a
worldwide readership.

MCG is active in many areas of UK museum digital practice, including the
organisation of an annual one-day conference, UKMW 08. The Group also
participates in sector research projects, like the Semantic Web Think
Tank (http://culturalsemanticweb.wordpress.com/
<http://culturalsemanticweb.wordpress.com/> ) and leads initiatives such
as the Jodi awards for accessible museum website design.

The post

This volunteer post requires you to manage and develop the MCG website,
liaising with the MCG committee and attending meetings when requested.
The work involved is usually no more than a few hours per month,
occasionally more by arrangement.

You'll be responsible for editing and developing the website in liaison
with relevant MCG members.

You'll facilitate effective communication of the MCG's messages through
good design, sustainable use of technology and resource-effective
deployment of dynamic database software.

From time to time custom-built pages such as survey forms or conference
registration forms would be required, and it would be part of your
duties to build these.

Experience required

You should have experience of developing websites using technologies
such as (X)HTML, basic Open Source packages like Wordpress, Movable Type
or a simple bespoke CMS.

In addition, you'll need experience in designing information
architecture and public-facing online editorial experience, including
expertise in writing for the web and multimedia.

It would be important to be knowledgeable about current web issues such
as accessibility requirements, good search engine optimisation
techniques, RSS, blogging facilities and forum provision.

Administration

You would also be responsible for maintaining hosting and serving
agreements and keeping track of domain name issues.

You'll provide background material to assist evaluation and monitoring
of the MCG website.

You will be required to keep reasonable documentation of work carried
out, including technical details of site software packages, for digital
archival reasons.

If you are interested in this interesting volunteer opportunity, please
email, in the first instance, Chair of the MCG Debbie Richards at
[log in to unmask]
