Centre for Transcultural Research 2007-08 Seminar Series London Metropolitan University, Tower Building, 166-220 Holloway Road, London N7 8DB (Tube: Holloway Road) Dr Horst Simon, King’s College, London How Politeness Shapes the Structure of Languages Tuesday, 30 October 2007: 6.00-7.30pm. Room: Graduate Centre GCG-09 Everyone welcome - Drinks afterwards. Dr Simon will talk about how politeness is built directly into the grammatical system. He will provide a brief overview of the most important grammatical marking systems on record with examples from East Asian and Native American languages and then focus on some Indo-European languages such as German and French, with the aim of highlighting the relevance of pragmatics and sociolinguistics in the shaping of linguistic structures, and hence grammatical analysis.
