For some reason of museum history lost in the Pleistocene, National Museums Scotland divides its collections so that the Quaternary mammals are lumped with the Recent mammals’n’birds - which is at least logical enough given the nature of the Scottish fossil record. So I referred your request to my colleague Andrew Kitchener who kindly came up with this, only to have it rejected by the mailing list as he’s not a member – so I’m doing it through myself, and here you are.

 

I remember only too well seeing the huge quantities of Kent’s Cavern bones when working for the AMCSW 20 years back …

We have a variety of specimens from Kents Cavern:

 

Z.1920.78 – four fragments donated by Mr John Gibson of Leith

Z.1950.21 – 82 mammal teeth donated by Mrs Fay Cullen, granddaughter of Mr John Gibson

Z.1917.23 -  a hyaena skull, three teeth or bone fragments and an “implement” donated by Erskine Beveridge, Dunfermline

 

In addition we have other teeth donated by the former Department of Anatomy of the University of Edinburgh, which are currently unregistered.

Dear all,

I am doing some research into which museums hold cave fauna from different regions in Great Britain. Hopefully this will increase awareness of what museums/universities hold and also to increase access to researchers, and will write results up in the Geological Curator.

Being in Devon, I thought I would start with the Devon Region. Please could you reply to me, and add if your museum has any collections from the list below. A quick search on your database for Devon, should (hopefully) bring up records easily. (If you do not know who has collected them, a note to say they are in your museum will be useful);
