Thank you to all those who responded to my request for information on dates for timelines. Sorry I haven't replied to you all personally. Here are the replies below. I think they came from GLS - or it could have been Hope or NES Arnold. It might be worth trying to find them on their website if only to look at which dates they thought were important! Maggie Monteath Museum Education Consultant ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ They may get in touch with you anyway, but I remember the British Library having an excellent timeline placing Britain's key events within those of World history - it was for the Lindisfarne gospels exhibition, so was focussed on the Anglo-Saxon era. Also, English Heritage have a good one that places things like the extinction of dinosaurs way before people evolved, as well as key historic dates in context. That one is for English History only though. We are currently consulting locally with public and with a load of curators and academics about what they think the 5 key dates from Liverpool's history are.... In terms of national and international we thought we might use the national curriculum references - Vikings and Romans arrival, Victorians, Pyramids built etc to give people a point of reference - what was happening in Liverpool during the Aztecs? etc. Only problem with that is that it does present quite an imperial view of history which we all try to avoid so would need to flag it up as 'text book history' or something - with a teacher with a mortar board. Our main emphasis though, is the local stuff - that is just a point of reference. We are incorporating objects into ours and also trying to think how we can make it accessible for children - icons etc. I'll copy you in when we've collated our key dates in case useful. We have one in Jane Austen's House which is very popular with the visitors, but because I had the temerity to include random events (from the BBC History website) like the Peterloo Massacre I was accused of trying to make a political message (by only one influential person it has to be said)!
