The following dataset is now available from the National Digital
Archive of Datasets:

CRDA/47/DS/2, EduBase snapshot as at 2006

EduBase is a database on schools and similar educational bodies
in England and Wales; it was the official database of educational
establishments for the Department for Education and Skills (DfES)
(now known as the Department for Children, Schools and Families
(DCSF)). The Department put EduBase live on 29 July 2002. The system
was set up to ensure enhanced data quality and provide greater data
confidence in the system's users.

NDAD have now published a preservation copy of this database, which
represents a 'snapshot' of the data from 2001 to 2006.

The live system is still available on the EduBase website at:

http://www.edubase.gov.uk/

This website provides a simple interface to the EduBase database,
and by using the Establishment Finder, users can locate information
about a particular Educational Establishment. (For completeness,
NDAD have taken a snapshot of this website and are preserving a copy
as part of the associated documentation).

EduBase provides quality information on educational establishments in
England and Wales. The predecessor system (the Register of Educational
Establishments, also held at NDAD in CRDA/47/DS/1) held records of
early years, primary, secondary, independent and further education
establishments. EduBase holds the same classes of records, but also
holds details on higher education establishments.

EduBase is a valuable resource. It continues to be used by
organisations such as The National College for School Leadership
(NCSL); OfSTED; the BBC; the National Foundation for Educational
Research (NfER); the National Grid (Power Lines); and to support
policy initiatives and systems such as Education Maintenance
Allowance (EMA); the Voluntary Aided Schools Information System
(VASIS, which was used to pay Voluntary Aided Schools); the Local
Education Authorities Information System (LEASIS, which was used to
hold data for briefings on Local Authority related issues), and the
Schools and Colleges Database.

NDAD's archive of the system also documents an interesting development,
in that it provides some evidence of how the former DfES interacted
with schools through EduBase. The Schools Interface was created in
September 2003, in order to empower schools with ownership of their
own details. This interface allowed schools to access the EduBase
system direct, by using the Data Collection Unit's username and
password. Schools were thus enabled to view and propose amendments
to their own details online.

The preservation copy of the dataset at NDAD is open, with the
exception of certain address and contact details which will remain
closed for six years (due to commercial interests); and email
addresses which will remain closed for 30 years (information provided
in confidence).

NDAD also holds the Schools' Census (See CRDA/13), an annual survey
carried out by the DfES gathering information about school size,
types of classes, numbers and types of staff, numbers of students.

Researchers and users may also wish to consult The Early
Years Census (EYC), which was first carried out by the DfES in
January 1999. A statistical first release is downloadable from:
