I think the revised version is really good, and engages with the claims made
for CBT in a focused and authoritative manner.

There is one section that makes me slightly uncomfortable though:

It is, surely, bad enough to be depressed because of difficult living
circumstances or to be anxious because you are subjected to regular domestic
violence, without being told your depression or anxiety are caused by your
own irrational thinking. Blaming the victim like this simply proffers
therapeutic ritual as a cure for societal oppression, whilst at the same
time placing responsibility for distress and its' resolution onto the
individual.

Since I haven't knowing inflicted CBT on anyone for quite a while now I feel
on rather shaky ground, but I'd like to consider how this well written and
powerful passage positions those who actually 'administer' CBT. The stepped
care model suggests that a lot of the hands-on CBT will be done by workers
with some training, perhaps at the level of graduate mental health workers,
in a way the proletariat of the helping professions, who are often motivated
by a desire to offer something helpful to people in distress (not a bad
motivation really). Would they really tell a woman experiencing domestic
violence that their depression is caused by irrational thinking,? Can we
make it clear it is 'the model' and not the individual practitioners that we
are accusing of such callousness - in the real world wouldnt such behaviour
be clearly unethical, whatever the CBT manual says? On the other hand it
might be very hard to change the wording of the paragraph without diluting
its rehetorical force...

Hamlets Community Learning Disability Service.

Hi Mark
Just made a couple of comments but pretty irrelevant in the scheme of
things, so whatever.
I can be Dr Penny Priest, at South Staffordshire & Shropshire Healthcare
Foundation NHS Trust (probably got those words round the wrong way it's such
a mouthful).
Re recipient, I would just go as widely as possible - sounds like you have
some journo contacts of your own for starters.
Best wishes
And thanks for a great letter.
Penny

Hi Valeska et al
Thanks Mark for your kind words. And to Dave Harper (off list) and Michael
Gopfert for helpful editorial comments.
I have to agree this time that Vladimir Illyich was on to something, so if
signatories so far could provide their rank/affiliations that would be a
great help. And I reckon that being seen as a coalition of academics,
'humble
postgrads' and the non-affiliated carries considerably more weight than just
us pointy-heads on our own.....
And still open to suggestions/details of editors to be recipients!

Hello everyone!

I've only caught up with my emails and this debate
today and have spent the last two hours reading
through the vast amount of postings and expressed
opinions and think it's great that there is such
vibrant and open dialogue on this list. Thanks for all
the food for thought!

Valeska

PS: Feel free to use my name to the statement though
I'm not sure how much use the humble opinion of a
postgrad will be! ;)
