For the attention of all current post-graduate students in classical studies: THE THOMAS WIEDEMANN MEMORIAL FUND Registered Charity No. 1091203 RESEARCH GRANTS FOR POSTGRADUATES IN CLASSICAL STUDIES http://www.thomaswiedemann.org.uk Thomas Wiedemann, Professor of Latin at the University of Nottingham from 1995 to 2001, died on 28 June 2001, aged fifty-one. Generations of students at Bristol and Nottingham were inspired by his teaching, and he had a huge influence on the study of the ancient world through both his writings and his many friendships. A memorial fund has been established in memory of Professor Wiedemann for the support of postgraduate study of the ancient world at UK universities. The trustees of the fund are Prof. Richard Buxton (Bristol), Prof. Stephen Hodkinson (Nottingham, Chair), Dr Oswyn Murray (Oxford), Dr Jonathan Prag (Oxford, Secretary and Treasurer), Prof. Christopher Rowe (Durham) and Prof. Alan Sommerstein (Nottingham). Donations to the fund continue to be welcome (see the website for further information). Grants from the Fund are available to assist with the costs of visits to universities, libraries, or museums in the UK or in Eire, related to actual or planned research activities. Any student taking a taught or research postgraduate course related to the ancient Greek or Roman world at any university in the UK or Eire is eligible to apply. Grants will be made mainly for the costs of travel, though assistance may also be given with accommodation and subsistence costs. It is expected that applicants will normally also seek a contribution to their costs from their own institution, and that in normal circumstances the home institution will aim to match the Fund's contribution, or at least to share part of the costs. The trustees are particularly keen to support attendance by individuals or groups at seminars or conferences. However, grants for attendance at the Classical Association Annual Conference, the Triennial Meeting of the Hellenic & Roman Societies, or at the Annual Meetings of Postgraduates in Ancient History (AMPAH) and in Ancient Literature (AMPAL) will be made only in exceptional cases. Applicants are reminded of the existence of several other more specific funds which may be more appropriate, such as the SPHS's Dover Fund. Applications for grants should be made by completing and submitting the online form, normally at least one month before the intended date of travel. http://www.thomaswiedemann.org.uk Applicants should also ask their supervisor or course director or another referee to send a brief statement in support of their application by e- mail to Dr Prag ([log in to unmask]). Awards will not be made for travel to countries other than the UK or Eire. Students are eligible for only one award in a single academic session. The Fund is grateful for the ongoing financial support of the Classical Association, the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, and the Higher Education Academy (HEA) History, Classics and Archaeology Subject Centre. The CA and the SPHS both currently make over a sum of money annually to the Fund on the basis that they support the same objects and currently endorse the Fund as being an effective means to make grants to postgraduates in the UK or Eire. The HEA Subject Centre has likewise made a grant to the Fund under the title of 'Preparing future faculty', with the intention specifically of supporting research postgraduates who have been invited to present papers. Grants made by the Fund are therefore frequently made in the name of one or more of these bodies. http://www.thomaswiedemann.org.uk/ Archive of list messages may be found at: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/classicsgrads Visit the same site to change your subscription settings.
