Did Mallory Climb
At the Royal Geographical
Society - Weds 3rd October 2007
Graham Hoyland,
a relative of 1920s Everest mountaineer Howard Somervell, gives a fascinating
talk on one of the great mountaineering mysteries. Himself an ‘Everester’ (summited May
1995) Graham is a passionate researcher of the story and this lead him to trial
historically accurate reconstructed clothing on the slopes of Mount Everest in
2006 and draw surprising conclusions.
Graham is a producer on the popular BBC TV show Dragon’s Den and was involved in the
1999 BBC/Nova expedition that found George Mallory’s remains.
This beautifully
illustrated talk will be of interest to Everest aficionados and the general
public alike. There are few stories
that grip the mountaineering community and the general public more than the
mystery of Mallory and Irvine.
Graham, as Somervell’s great-nephew, is well placed to comment on the
history of the 1924 expedition and on the most recent research and theories
about whether or not the two men made it to the summit 29 years before Edmund
Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
Tickets are
