Hi Jenny, I would say Irony with more than a hint of truth. Having a place in the commission is one thing but no one from the other five remaining 'equality strands' has a permanent committee, which has the real power. Leaving the equality strands 'out to dry' promotes inequity and smacks of 'divide and rule' or even 'Institutional discrimination' from a body that is set up to protect us from such discrimination. However, as an optimist I look forward to the day (within my lifetime!) when we will have a body that not only represents the various equality strands in a equitable way but also help to fight and challenge unlawful discrimination in all its forms. But in my view the thing to be just now is lesbian, gay or bisexual. Not only have this group gained a place in the new commission (and a commissioner) but they have Stonewall which has campaigned more effectively than any body I can imagine. I know there is still a lot to achieve; I know there's the bishop of Hereford; (and a dreadful hint in today's Higher, p 4, that the Council of Church Colleges and Universities would like to see a GOR in respect of sexual orientation for chancellors and principals ('but care should be taken') (!!!).
