Dear Robin & colleagues,

You may be interested to know that the Department of Health (DH) have also produced a SES. I am a part of the 'pilot learning sites' for the DH and in fact did a presentation for them (05/10/07) at the QE2 conference halls on "How to start a SES". It would be interesting to see whether ECU and DH have come up with the same type of scheme.

Having seen a host of SES's (hurriedly) produced, particularly from statutory bodies, I can honestly say that I was not impressed. If you are writing a SES please ensure that you are compliant with the legislations (RR(A), DDA etc), which state that you have to produce either a Race, Disability or Gender schemes (nothing about SES's). For your SES to be compliant with current legislations, you will have to ensure that current RES, DES and GES are a part of it and you are able to 'pull-out' any of these schemes from the SES. The structure is as important as the content if it is to be used and be legally compliant. I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Dear colleagues,

Just a quick note to say that ECU has put together some guidance on single equality schemes which is currently being typeset and will hopefully be ready shortly. The guidance has been informed by advice from the 3 former equality commissions as well as interviews with E&D managers in HEIs which have already developed single equality schemes. The guidance discusses some of the considerations that organisations must take into account in order to comply with the law.

We will notify you as soon as the guidance has been uploaded to our website.

Best wishes

Robyn

Dear Steph

We currently have separate ES but may think of moving towards an SES, I

happen to know that Durham had an SES and HEFCE, they would be worth

looking at.

Subject: single equality schemes

Hello all,

I'm looking into the use of single equality schemes and policies.

I'm a development officer supporting colleges and universites with

equality in Scotland, and we're exploring ways forward, bearing in mind

the EHRC and a likely single equality act. I've also been exploring the

use of single schemes in the public and private sectors to see what's

happening more widely. Would any one be prepared to share with me their

single scheme or reasoning behind why they have one (or have decided not

to have one)?

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Steph
