Hi Silvana,

I would suggests that, if you can, you date the specimen directly; it is thought that horses became extinct in the Americas in the early Holocene at the latest, so the piece is very probably a contaminant from later periods.

Dear Silvana,
our List-Master, Umberto, will most likely remind you, that there should be no attachments to mails to this list. You can post photos to the bonecommons site.
As to your find, it is the right mandible of a new born foal, Equus sp., up to 2 weeks. Whether it is horse, donkey or one of the hybrids I cannot tell.
Cheers,
Vern.

Dear colleagues: I have doubts on the filiation taxonomic of this lower jaw. I want to know to that animal  it belongs .
It was found in an archaeological excavation in the Puna Argentina. There was found united camélidos (Lama glama and Vicugna vicugna). The associate dataciones indicate 580 + - 60 and 690 + - 60 years AP. Thank you very much, I hope that they could help me!!!!
