NEW MODERATOR AND RAS ORDINARY MEETINGS ORGANISER

Since Ian Howarth has completed his term as RAS Secretary, Helen Walker
has taken over organising the RAS e-circulars and organising speakers
for the ordinary meetings. Suggestions for either are welcome.

OCTOBER RAS MEETINGS - FRIDAY OCTOBER 12

October's Specialist Discussion Meetings are:

  "Early Solar-System processes and meteorites"
  "Statistical challenges in particle astrophysics and cosmology"

in the lecture theatres of the Geological Society and the Society of
Antiquaries (both in Burlington House, Piccadilly), respectively, from
10:30-15:30.  Full details at

The subsequent A&G meeting is open to all, with:

   Prof Mike Lockwood (Southampton/RAL) -
      Long-term variability of the Sun and recent climate change
   Dr Giovanna Tinetti (STFC/University College London)  -
      Finding water vapour in the atmosphere of an extrasolar planet
   Prof John Womersley (STFC) -
      Developing STFC's Science and Technology Strategy

(Geological Society Lecture Theatre, 16:00-18:00)

The ordinary meeting is available as a webcast in the following week
(if the quality of the recording is satisfactory).

FUTURE MEETINGS - ADVANCE WARNING

6 October - Society for History of Astronomy Autumn Conference

RAS Fellows are invited to the 2007 SHA Autumn Conference in Birmingham
at the same cost as SHA members (10 pounds). See the website for details

26 October - UK Planetary Forum early-career scientists meeting in Oxford

Any early-career scientists are welcome to attend. Although the abstract

31 October - Introduction to the News Media for Scientists and Engineers

The Science Media Centre are organising this half-day event in Durham for
scientists and engineers who have very little experience of the media.

BURLINGTON HOUSE UPDATE

The major works to make this historic, listed building fit for the
Society's purposes and of greater benefit for members (including
installation of a fully-equipped lecture room with seating for about
100) as well as to improve access for the disabled, will be completed
for the December 2007 meeting.

RAS NAM 2008

It's never too early to note the dates of the UK's premier gathering of
professional astronomers in your diary.  The 2008 RAS National Astronomy
Meeting will be held at Queen's University Belfast, 31 March to 4 April
2008.
