The University of Salford is seeking a PhD student to study door step issues
in 24 hour cities as part of the Vivacity2020 consortium
(http://www.vivacity2020.eu/). Previous work has show that door-step issues,
such as rubbish, are high on the list of city centre residents’ gripes about
city centre living. This Ph.D. project will investigate the social,
cultural and physical dimensions of door-step issues. For instance, what
constitutes graffiti is not unanimously agreed upon and expectations about
its visibility, presence and management are diverse. What decisions are made
by whom in dealing with graffiti? When are the decisions made? How can city
centre design be improved to deal with this and other door-step issues?

The research will investigate the technical issues, for example waste
production, minimisation and disposal in city centre contexts. Additionally
the research will consider the social and cultural dimensions. Starting
with data that has been collected for Vivacity2020 project and through
further interviews and focus groups, a more complete picture of the
attitudes will be developed. Key players who deal with facilities and
services will be targeted to understand the processes. Ultimately, the Ph.D.
will investigate how design can be used to reduce door step problems in the
urban context.

Fieldwork will take place within the cities of London, Manchester and
Sheffield. Close working with other partners in the consortium, especially
London Metropolitan University, is anticipated.

Applicants should be highly motivated, and have a degree in social science,
environmental science or a related discipline.

The studentship will carry a stipend of £12,600 per annum and tuition fees
at the home student rate. Due to the funding regulations, applicants must be
UK nationals or have a relevant connection to the UK (normally demonstrated
by 3 years residence, not for full time study). Further guidance on
eligibility is available from www.epsrc.ac.uk <http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/> .

Applications will be assessed as received and all applicants should follow
the standard University postgraduate admissions process.
