Dear all

Launch event and debate of a major research survey entitled "Public Attitudes to, and Perceptions of, Engineering and Engineers"

The report was jointly commissioned by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Engineering and Technology Board and explores society’s outlook on engineering and its impact on the world. In addition to providing a baseline measure of the public’s knowledge and understanding, the study incorporated some interesting and creative methodologies to explore the drivers of engagement, and probed the reasons for ‘mis-perceptions’ of engineering. This event will present the results of the survey and provide the opportunity to explore the issues that emerged.

The presentation and discussion of the survey’s findings will be followed by an open-floor debate. Five panel members will fuel the debate by each presenting their proposal to change the face of engineering.

Public Attitudes to, and Perceptions of, Engineering and Engineers Survey 2007 was commissioned jointly by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Engineering and Technology Board. The research was carried out by BMRB, the British Market Research Bureau and the field work took place in May and June 2007. The findings provide a baseline measure of public knowledge and understanding of engineering which can inform action plans to build engagement. Two separate strands of research took place: A quantitative survey and a qualitative workshop. The quantitative survey was among a nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults aged 16+. The qualitative element of the research was deliberative in form and comprised one workshop event.
