Dear all,

Apologies for cross posting.

Trans-disciplinary PhD Studentship, Napier University, Edinburgh, UK

School of Computing & School of Creative Industries [Design]

A fully funded three-year PhD studentship is available between the School of Computing and the School of Creative Industries [Design].

This research will explore technology infused design, art and/or architecture. The candidate will work with a new generation of designers, artists and architects that are exploring new and creative uses for digital technology, from a social, conceptual or aesthetic perspective. We are looking for an individual who exhibits a non-linear train of thought in their work, where technology is re-invested with subjectivity and playfulness resulting in work that triggers thoughts as a great book or film can do.

Professor Anthony Dunne, Head of Interaction Design at the Royal College of Art, London states: "New hybrids of design are emerging. People don't fit in neat categories; they're a mixture of artists, engineers, designers, thinkers. They're in that fuzzy space and might be finding it quite tough, but the results are really exciting."

We are therefore looking for applicants who have, or expect to obtain, a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours, or Masters, degree in a discipline such as Computer Science or Design. However, due to the interdisciplinary nature of the proposed research we would like to hear from graduates from other areas such as anthropology, engineering, psychology or sociology that share a keen interest and an empathy in the convergence of technology and creative practice.

The studentship provides a standard living allowance (of £12,600 per annum in 2007-08) and also covers full fees up to a level appropriate to UK/EU applicants, for up to three years subject to satisfactory progress. The studentship is expected to start on 1 October 2007.

Applicants are strongly advised to include as much detail as they can about their research interests on additional sheets, including any ideas they have about exploring the convergence of technology and design, art and/or architecture in this project.

Formal applications should be sent to the address on the form: The Research Office, Napier University, Merchiston Campus, 10 Colinton Road, Edinburgh, EH10 5DJ.
