Needed: Volunteer members of the National Trust Learning Panel

Members of the Learning Panel
The National Trust protects and opens to the public over 350 historic properties, including houses, gardens, castles and mills. We welcome over 16 million visitors to these properties every year, and another 50 million to our beaches, moorland and countryside properties. For many of our visitors, learning is a major factor in their decision to join or support us.

We are now poised to enter a new phase in the implementation of our learning activities. The National Trust’s new strategy commits us to offering all of our visitors the opportunity for life-changing experiences by placing learning and discovery at the heart of everything we do. To help us achieve this we are in the process of establishing a new Advisory Panel to provide support and guidance to the whole organisation, via the learning team.

The Panel will advise us on current trends, practice and standards in access and learning, and will challenge our aspirations, assumptions and strategies. The Panel will act as a catalyst for deepening our relationships with existing and new supporters - and will focus on developing the use of challenging and innovative interpretation. The Panel will also establish ways of working to improve and share learning between all our expert Panels.

We are looking to recruit a group of up to 12 volunteer experts in fields related to formal, informal and non-formal learning, including interpretation, access and diversity, and internal learning by staff and volunteers. Applicants will demonstrate an ability to contribute to our thinking about heritage and environmental learning at strategic and practical levels, and have significant experience in one or more learning fields.

This appointment requires a commitment of approximately 6 days a year, and is for an initial term of three years. The position is voluntary, but expenses will be paid.

Interviews will be held in Swindon on the 30th October.
For further details about the role and to request an information pack please contact the Deputy Secretary of the National Trust on 01793 817416 or request an information pack by emailing [log in to unmask] The closing date for submission of applications is 5pm on 12th October 2007.
