Post:   Curator  - one temporary, or two part-time positions to cover a period of maternity leave until the substantive post holder returns.  (initially for period of 6 months).

The Curator of Abergavenny Museum & Castle is due to start a period of maternity leave.  It is expected this will begin in October/November, but this will be confirmed at the time of appointment.  We are looking for a temporary replacement to carry on the management of the museum and the surrounding castle ruins and grounds. 

The intention is to recruit either a single, full-time temporary Curator, or two part-time temporary Curators, each working for 2.5 days. In the latter case, we hope to select candidates with differing primary experience and skills, one to focus upon collection management and development, the other upon access and interpretation, including a lively education programme. However both posts should be able to cover all aspects of the job

Applicants should have experience in collections-based work, experience of effectively managing staff and volunteers and running successful museum events and activities.  You should be an Associate of the Museums Association or possess an equivalent level of qualification in museum work.

Job Purpose

  1. To maintain and develop Abergavenny Museum and Castle as an accessible cultural, recreational and educational resource for the benefit of the people of Monmouthshire and the general visiting public by :-

  2. To promote the care and understanding of the heritage of Monmouthshire’s communities and environment

Major Tasks

  1. Collect, research, document, preserve, exhibit and interpret objects, and associated information, of local significance, in accordance with Service policy and the ethical code of the Museums Association.

  2. Develop and exploit the potential of the site and collections as an educational resource for people of all ages, in accordance with Corporate, Departmental and Service policies for the provision of ‘life-long learning’ and ‘access for all’.

  3. Develop and exploit the potential of the site as a venue for appropriate public events and activities to enhance the cultural and recreational service provided.

  4. Manage the preservation of the site’s historic buildings and Scheduled Monument, liasing with the appropriate statutory and funding bodies, and the appropriate services of the Council.

  5. Promote and develop activities which encourage and support the involvement of the local community with the Museum and Castle.

  6. Liase with appropriate groups and societies whose objectives are relevant to the Museums Service. (The Curator serves as an ex-officio officer of the Local History Society)

  7. Maximise public use of the site and collections by maintaining effective displays, exhibitions, information and other services.

  8. Increase public awareness of the Museum and Castle, and the services on offer, through appropriate publicity and marketing initiatives.

  9. Supervise and monitor, and advise on the development of, the museum shop and other income-generating initiatives.

  10. Assist with the development of planning and monitoring strategies for the Museums Service as a whole.

  11. Manage the day-to-day operation of the Museums Service Central Store in Abergavenny, supervising and monitoring access, security and conditions.

  12. Manage, supervise and care for the Council’s employees at the site in accordance with the Council’s policies for personnel and service-delivery.

  13. Maintain and monitor the security of staff, visitors, premises, grounds, collections, stock and equipment, ensuring that the Council’s statutory Health and Safety responsibilities are met in respect of staff and visitors.

  14. Act as a Keyholder for the museum premises, responding to alarm calls as necessary

  15. Provide advice and practical help on museum matters to approved outside organisations as required, according to Council policy.

  16. Actively support and implement the principles and practice of equality of opportunity as laid down in Council policy.

Experience

  1. Minimum of three years’ of full-time, collections-based work in a museum, with direct experience of the following areas:
  2. Experience of effectively managing staff, including volunteers

  3. Experience of managing successful museum events and activities, including originating and staging temporary exhibitions.


  4. Ability, Skills and Knowledge

    Evidence of a clear understanding of, and a positive approach to the implementation of :-

  5. Health & Safety legislation
  6. Equal Opportunities Legislation
  7. Historic buildings and sites legislation
  8. Museum Accreditation standards

  9. Awareness of current practices and standards relating to the security of people, premises, museum collections, stock and equipment
  10. Highly developed writing, oral and listening skills with the ability to speak effectively in public to groups of all sizes and types
  11. Ability to enthuse, motivate and relate to people at all levels
  12. Ability to work as part of a small team
  13. Ability to establish and develop positive relationships with organisations and individuals within the local community, encouraging use of, and support for, museum services.
  14. A degree-level qualification in a subject relevant to local/social history.
  15. Must be an Associate of the Museums Association or possess an equivalent level of qualification in museum work.
  16. Ability, and the willingness, to work outside normal ‘office’ hours when necessary, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  17. Must be able to drive and have access to a suitable vehicle.
