Dear Colleagues,
The following workshop, organised by the CHILL CPD team and held at CILIP HQ may be of interest to you, especially given the recent list-based debate over the role of libraries and librarians and how our user-bases perceive us. CHILL is the Consortium of Independent Health Libraries in London (http://www.chill-london.org.uk/) and one of our aims is to provide other libraries with opportunities to improve services through mutual communication and co-operation.

The cost of attending is £25 (non-CHILL members) / £15 (CHILL members) and we will be sending invoices out after the event. Please e-mail me directly if you would like to reserve a place or have any further queries. We have a limited number of places still available and these will be reserved on a first come, first served basis.

Kind Regards
Doug

Making yourself indispensable: the resourceful librarian.
When finance is tight and the axe swings, in many workplaces it can swing in the direction of the Library.
In this three hour, interactive workshop you will:
· Learn why the library is often a soft target and what you can do about it
· Find out why usage statistics won’t save you
· Examine the psychology and culture of organisations
· Identify some hidden assumptions that may be holding your service back
· Discover what other librarians have done to embed their services, and even grow them as a result!
· Leave the day with ideas and strategies to make yourself indispensable
The speakers at this workshop have all worked in challenging environments and will be sharing the strategies they used and the lessons learned:

David Bates was the Librarian at Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham Health Authority from 1991-1998, and found his own department trying to axe the Library. David has also trained and worked as a coach since 1999, working with many people facing challenges in the workplace.

Jackie Cheeseborough will share her experience of change management at the RCN. Learn how she took the lead in repositioning the Library as an information service and managed to increase their staff, rather than experience a reduction!

Karen Reid and Florence McNally from the Royal College of Physicians will share their experiences of turning a proposed departmental restructuring into the opportunity for a library-led review of services and user needs.
